Like in the previous years, Wisma Jerman once again opened its gates to welcome visitors at the Wisma Jerman Open House. The event took place on July 15th 2018, which also coincided with the finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Under the slogan ‘Dabei sein ist alles!’ – translated as “Participating is Everything!’, the general public and the students of Wisma Jerman were invited to come together and participate in a series of events.
With the spirit of the theme ‘Sport’ Wisma Jerman had prepared various interesting games and events, among others a table soccer tournament, video games like FIFA18 and a quiz rally. One of the quizzes was delivered using an application called “Kahoot”, which can be used as a teaching media. In the multipurpose room Halle, visitors were invited to participate in a selection of fun games – some involving the German language – which the two MCs had prepared, including a soccer commentator competition, a fashion show, and chain sentence games. The enthusiasm showed by the participants was evident from the number of groups competing in the short video competition where they had been asked to produce a video introducing Wisma Jerman. The winners of these competitions won cinema vouchers and other attractive prizes.
Other activities also attracted the interest of many visitors. A film screening showcased “Der ganz große Traum” and “Das Wunder von Bern”, two German movies with one main theme – soccer. A photobooth provided an opportunity to take pictures with the German national soccer team. Hungry guests also tried out German dessert specialties and enjoyed freshly grilled German sausages.
Aside from all the fun and games, visitors also had the opportunity to seek information about living and studying in Germany. Information booths on topics such as studying in Germany, DAAD scholarships, German courses and exams in Wisma Jerman, as well as about becoming an Au-Pair in Germany were presented at the Open House. Curious guests also learned their first German expressions in free-of-cost short introduction courses. All in all, the event was a lot of fun for everybody involved and was very much welcome by longtime friends and first time visitors. Wisma Jerman is already looking forward to next year when it will once again open its doors for the general public.
