OPEN HOUSE 2025 “DEUTSCH – SPRACHE DER INNOVATION
On Saturday, 23rd of August 2025, Wisma Jerman invited the public and friends of German language and culture to its annual Open House. This year’s edition was held under the theme ”Deutsch – Sprache der Innovation”. The theme was chosen in recognition of Germany’s many innovations that have changed the world and its strong position in science and research. The main objective of the event was to introduce German culture, education, and economic cooperation to the wider community in Surabaya and its surrounding areas.
During the event, attendees were able to participate in a variety of games and activities focusing on innovation and technology, presented by Wisma Jerman and several invited communities. Among them a seminar themed “Astronomy Development Nowadays” by Muhammad Rizky Pradana and the Surabaya Astronomy Club (SAC). Beside this the SAC also held a mini exhibition presenting astronomical instruments such as telescopes, 3D glasses and sundials. Our guests were also invited to observe celestial objects.
Other communities contributed with equally exciting activities. ECOTON (Ecological Observation and Wetland Conservations) invited our guests to test microplastic levels by swabbing their skin and examining the results under an electron microscope, which were displayed on a monitor screen. Aksi Cinta Indonesia (ACI) through its program Arek Suroboyo Berkarya, showcased environment-based innovations developed by elementary and junior high school students in Surabaya. These included the production of multipurpose liquids, eco-enzymes created through the fermentation of organic waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps, sugar (molasses) and water. Adding an artistic highlight to the program, Mr. D, a multi-talented artist from Surabaya, exhibited a series of futuristic sketches blending traditional and modern themes through the innovative medium of QR Art. The QR Art works on display were related to some of Germany’s discoveries and inventions.
For guests who preferred a more relaxed experience, the Open House also offered a wide range of quizzes and games and an entertaining stage program, including the annual Wisma Jerman Open House Rally. Our course participants proudly presented digital posters revolving around the Open House theme to the audience as part of a competition. As in previous years, our German trial class (Schnupperkurs) presented a highlight of the program and was met with enthusiasm by the guests. Those interested in education and career opportunities could receive free consultation on Wisma Jerman’s language courses and exams, as well as on studying, working, vocational training (Ausbildung), and volunteering in Germany. In addition, visitors were provided with detailed information about studying in Germany by representatives of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Adding to the lively atmosphere of the day were a VR (Virtual Reality) experience, various board games, and a photo wall where visitors could put on fun accessories and capture some memorable moments. The entire event was accompanied by live music provided by Komunitas Mata Hati. Last but not least, the Open House 2025 also hosted the final round of a table tennis tournament for the course participants who had played the qualifying rounds already in the weeks prior with the opportunity to win free courses at Wisma Jerman as a grand prize. A small selection of typical German dishes, cakes, coffee, and tea complimented the program, rounding off a joyful day for guests together with the Wisma Jerman team. As in previous years the Wisma Jerman Open House offered an exciting experience and created unforgettable moments for everyone.
Guests had ample opportunities to win attractive prizes provided by our generous sponsors including Tupperware, Kampi Hotel, Aria Centra Hotel, TS Suites Artotel, Garuda Indonesia, goodie bags from Kokola Biscuits and RSIA Kendangsari and even vouchers for free Wisma Jerman language courses. We would like to extend our gratitude to all sponsors who supported our event.
