In contrast to other editions up to now, this time Hallo, Halle! welcomed two speakers, namely ITS lecturer Nisfu Asrul Sani and Mike Neuber, the Managing Director of Wisma Jerman. Together they spoke about data privacy and protection but each from a different perspective, i.e., the Indonesian and the German viewpoint. By doing so, the differences in regulations and culture regarding data privacy were highlighted.
The importance of data protection is increasing in line with the more frequent use of the internet and technology, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, which makes people depend more heavily on technologies. Of course, this also affects the average user’s privacy. Data protection can be efficient when it is accompanied by an appropriate regulatory framework and supported by users’ behavior.
The event, which took place on June 13th 2020 and was attended by 15 participants, showed that data protection is not yet as strongly developed in Indonesia as it is in Germany. The same accounts for user awareness for private data protection, which is still comparably low in Indonesia. In order to overcome these issues the two speakers stressed the importance of knowing and acting according to the security and privacy options and regulations of the applications we use. What is more, regularly changing passwords goes a long way in providing more security for us online as well as offline.
