Sommerfest 2022 and Opening of Photo Exhibition ‘Lampau, Sekarang & Mendatang’
On 18 July, 2022, as a part of the celebrations of Wisma Jerman’s 10-year anniversary, we held two events on the same day. Both events were held offline and after a long time of online only activities we were very happy to finally be able to welcome guests on our premises again. First, the Wisma Jerman Sommerfest 2022, brought a variety of entertainment activities and performances. For this event we were happy to collaborate with Komunitas Mata Hati (the social community of disabilities young people) who performed an acoustic music concert that captured the audience’s attention.
Besides music, the more than 200 attendees were entertained by a group of dancers from Universitas Negeri Surabaya. The group performed a self-created dance that was modeled after traditional German folklore dances. With their authentic looking costumes and their performance, they were able to bring the atmosphere of a German summer event to Wisma Jerman. Adding to the fun atmosphere of the event, a stand-up comedy show in the afternoon caused a lot of laughter. A short course in German language offered the chance to get to know some first words and expressions, and a variety of mini quizzes about Germany and Wisma Jerman, a spelling-bee contest and more, provided opportunities for the guests to win interesting gifts or even a voucher for a free language course. During the entire afternoon, visitors had an opportunity to taste a selection of authentic German food and traditionally produced local ice cream. The event was well received by the guests and created some unforgettable moments for everyone.
In the evening the activities continued with the opening of the photo exhibition ‘Lampau, Sekarang & Mendatang’. This event showcased a selection of pictures that have been submitted for a photo competition titled “Tradisi dan Kemajuan di Indonesia” earlier in May 2022. The participants were asked to capture traditional elements that are still very much alive in everyday life in modern Indonesia. The exhibition is the result of a collaboration with the Surabaya photography community Komunitas Matanesia, the German Photography Association DVF and the local performing artist collaborative Serbuk Kayu.
The exhibition was opened by Mr. Christopher Tjokrosetio, The Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany and Mike Neuber, Director of Wisma Jerman. After the opening, the audience was invited to follow two talkshows, and learn more about the photo competition and the ensuing exhibition. During the first session the competition jury, consisting of three local and two German jurors, as well as 3 of 10 competition winners, discussed the evaluation process and selected pictures of the competition. The second session focused on the curation workshop that was held prior to the exhibition and the idea and realization of the exhibition itself. The discussion featured representatives of Serbuk Kayu as well as participants of the workshop. About 50 guests witnessed the opening sessions and subsequently visited the exhibition that was curated by Komunitas Serbuk Kayu and the participants of the workshop, and presented in Berlin room.
We would like to say thank you to everybody who was involved with the two events for their support, and we look forward to welcoming you again at our upcoming events.
